quick informal survey of apps being used at Internet cafe in paris

I've been hitting up the internet cafe's here in Paris pretty regularly.  Here's the top apps being used that I could see:
- facebook
- world of warcraft
- Yahoo! Mail
- MSN Mail
- Warcraft 3 / Starcraft
- Battlefield 2

i'm surprised i'm not seeing a lot of youtube or my space.  Facebook has really taken over....

EA Playground actually looks fun!

Just saw the latest for EA Playground.  Actually looks like it will be fun! Might be the first wii game to really capture the same fun factor as Wii Tenis!

Marketing for the Wii

So i just saw a video of Boogie for the Wii.  A game that EA will be releasing soon.

It just reminded me of something I was telling people when i first saw Wii at E3 back in 2006.  The way Wii games are marketted has to be different than how you traditionaly market video games.  The fun is in the controls and how the players play the game, not in the actual game itself.  In effect the game is playing the player and not the player playing the game. So the key to marketing Wii games is showing how the player will be looking while playing the game as opposed to just showing video of the games.

This trailer is exactly what you're not supposed to do to promote Wii games IMHO.  It just shows the game itself.  As pretty and awesome as it looks, and I'm actually expecting this game to be a very good and fun Wii game, just seeing the game itself doesn't get me excited about it.  I want to see a player, or a celebrity playing the game and what kind of silly moves they are doing and how silly their expression gets as they are playing.

Anyways, that's the Diary of a Mad Game Developer for the day.

Happy marketing!

Brands vs Categories. Which do consumers love?

Really great blog by Laura Ries.

Brands succeed not because of love but because of location. It got me thinking about how to launch a new company and how to create that brand. The most important step is to be launching your company in a category/space that is new and the consumers will fall in love with. The actual brand/logo/name you pick is almost irrelevent. I mean we were all complaining about the Wii name at e3 in 2006 and now look at what that name has become? If it wasn't that it kicked off this whole motion sensing control industry people would be crying about how nintendo killed itself by picking a bad name for their new system.

Anyway, very well written Laura. Thanks for the food for thouguht.

Can't teach an old dog new tricks....not.......

So me and some coworkers went to SMP Skatepark in Shanghai today. Fun times. We all started rollerblading about a couple months ago and have been going at least a few times a week during lunch times.  Everyone is really starting to improve and I'm having a blast doin it.  We're to the point now where we're starting to jump off stuff.  Today did some neat jumps....did one where i skated up to a little platform and jumped up road over a bit then jumped off the other side.  Thing was only about a foot high but was exciting nonetheless.  Also jumped down a little set of about 3 steps.   Someone told me we're supposed to be learning this stuff when we were kids not when we're in our 30's. Ha whatever.....Check out the video of my
incredibly sad atempt at a jump haha.  Next time we go SMP we'll take some better jump videos and take some videos of our halfpipe action...

Disney doing hand drawn movies again...

Saw that disney is going back into making hand animated films.  I applaud them.  After watching Lady and the Tramp and incredibles the last week, I have to say I really miss the Disney Magic.  As much as I love the pixar magic, there is still absolutely nothing like Disney Magic.  Can't wait for the Frog Princess.....

Game3.0 ..... PS3 and Sony starting to show some awesome stuff.

Loved phil harrison's speech today at GDC.  Talking about Game 3.0.  I mean it was basically Web2.0 applied to the gaming world.  So for us internet people it's nothing revolutionary, but the application of it in games that they showed was simply stunning.

Make sure you go check out videos on Little Big Planet and Sing Star PS3.  Two absolutely awesome game applications.

World of Warcraft example of fundamental difference between China and America.....

So i started playing burning crusade recently. Yes yes, i know, i should avoid the warcrack...but hey blood elves and flying mounts! who can resisit.....

So I went to vegas last week and while I was gone i gave access to my WoW account to one of my local friends....This morning we had the following conversation.

[10:35] zoomCrypt:
do american player seem to play different than cinese player?
[10:35] 新年好: yeah, a bit, even i always play in the time that there's almost no players
[10:35] zoomCrypt: what difference can you tell?
[10:35] 新年好: once, i went to kill a man to finish a quest
[10:36] 新年好: when i arrive there comes another player
[10:36] 新年好: if in china, we two will try to compete to kill the monster first
[10:37] 新年好: but the other player asked me to be a team and kill it together
[10:37] 新年好: so we don;t need to 抢
[10:37] 新年好: either of us and kill it independently
[10:37] zoomCrypt: fundamental difference between US culture and Chinese culture
[10:37] 新年好: yeah
[10:37] 新年好: the feeling is good
[10:38] zoomCrypt: that's so funnnny
[10:38] 新年好: and i feel shy when one time
[10:38] zoomCrypt: culture difference even in WoW
[10:39] 新年好: some one is killing a monster to get a quest item behind it
[10:39] 新年好: and when he is killing, i came up to get the item
[10:39] zoomCrypt: hahahahhaha
[10:39] zoomCrypt: yes we hate peopel like that
[10:39] 新年好: after i got it i realized i;m doing something impolite
[10:39] zoomCrypt: i nCHina that is ok?
[10:39] 新年好: so i apologize to him
[10:39] 新年好: not good, but we are used to it
[10:40] 新年好: we hate this behavior but we do it ourselves
[10:40] 新年好: because everyone do it

Anyways....

NBA All Star Game day1

the NBA has taken over vegas. Everywhere you go you see NBA marketing, NBA fans, and even players just strolling around the casino's!

The jam session was a really cool event. Lots of players come by and you have kids running around everywhere getting autographs and taking photos of players.  If you ever have a chance to take your kids to the Jam Session and your kids are at all basketball fans. Just do it!

The all star saturday night was fun.  Lebron was a total lazy ass during the skills competition and kobe choked in the finals.  Arenas choked in the 3 pt contest finals.  Dunk contest was great fun.  Even more fun in person!

Got to meet shaq and scottie pippen at a party thrown by CCTV.  Thanks CCTV for putting that party together! Saw Garnett and his crew strolling around at bellagio, saw Michael Jordan walking out of bellagio after his party.

Anyway great great fun.  All Star Game tonight!

In taipei

Arrived in taipei last night. It's rainy. Taipei's interesting. Kinda reminds me of the Los Angeles. Supposedly i'm in downtown right now. I live right next to the taipei 101. Can't see a whole lot of high rises around. Definately doesn't feel as megatropolis as shanghai. The one thing that's dissappointing me is that this place definately is not as english friendly as say hong kong or singapore. I think that shanghai is more likely to become one of the worlds great cities befor taipei ever does because of this. Anyways time to go out and explore........

learning to inline skate

so since i have lots of time to kill on weekends here in singapore i decided to try and learn inline skating.  You know another one of those things that I always wanted to do but never got off my arse to make happen.  Amazing how many of these things you start taking care of once you hit 30 :)

So I've had three lessons now and it's going very well. Very proud of myself.  I can go straight very quickly and smoothly now. I can stop. i can do some simple turns.  main thing is i feel i'm starting to "get it" already.....feels so nice and smooth just going forward that it's fun.

Kinda funny learning along side these 8 year old kids though haha.  They litterally skate circles around you haha.

Singapore....not bad at all

I stand corrected. Singapore is a really really wonderful city.  Was walking around the waterfront tonight and it was just really nice.  Lots of great places to relax with friends or a loved one and just eat and chat or enjoy the waterways.  There was so many live performances going on too.  Fun Fun place.......  I still like shanghai better :)  but this place is not bad at all.....
